A Stroll Through Merchants Square in Colonial Williamsburg

On my recent visit to Colonial Williamsburg, I found myself wandering through Merchants Square—a delightful mix of history, shopping, and small-town charm.

This beautifully preserved area, just steps from the colonial buildings, feels like stepping into another time but with all the comforts (and temptations) of today.

There’s something about this part of Williamsburg that invites you to slow down. Maybe it’s the brick sidewalks, or the way the shops seem to gently pull you in one by one.

Either way, it’s the kind of place you don’t rush through.

Lunch at The Cheese Shop Williamsburg

My daughter-in-law, Sarah, had suggested I try The Cheese Shop, and I’m so glad I did. Some recommendations are just good… and some are the kind you remember later and think, that was exactly right.

The lively crowd, friendly staff, and delicious sandwiches made it the perfect spot for lunch. It’s the kind of place where you want to linger, maybe with a glass of wine and good company, just watching people come and go.

Inside, shelves are lined with specialty goods, local favorites, and little things you didn’t know you needed until you saw them. It feels lived-in, loved, and very much part of the community.

Exploring the Shops in Merchants Square

Afterward, I wandered in and out of the shops that line the brick sidewalks—and honestly, that might be my favorite way to spend an afternoon.

The candy shop drew me in—I couldn’t resist picking up a bit of chocolate for later (because some traditions are worth keeping). Rows of handmade treats and truffles made it nearly impossible to choose just one.

A few doors down, I discovered a wonderful bookstore—the kind that invites you to browse for far longer than you meant to.

Quiet corners, thoughtful displays, and shelves full of stories just waiting to be opened.

Here’s what I’ve learned: the best finds are rarely planned.

The Atmosphere of Merchants Square

There’s so much to enjoy in Merchants Square, from unique boutiques to cozy cafés, all framed by colonial-style architecture and beautiful trees.

But more than anything, it’s the feeling.

People strolling without hurry. Conversations spilling out onto sidewalks. The simple rhythm of a place that hasn’t forgotten how to just be.

It’s not overly polished. It’s not trying too hard.

And that’s exactly what makes it special.
