Creating the perfect Halloween costume has always been one of my favorite excuses to pull out the glue gun and make a little magic.

Halloween is about the joy of making — the creativity, the memories, and the laughter that comes from a little too much glitter.

As I start planning for Halloween 2025, I can’t help but think back on some of my favorite Halloweens through the years — from Charlie Brown trunk-or-treats and homemade villains to glow-in-the-dark DJs and tea parties with the Queen of Hearts.

Those memories remind me why this season is such a treat: it’s equal parts nostalgia and new inspiration.

2025 Halloween Costume Trends

Every year brings its own wave of ideas, and 2025 is no exception. From pop culture to timeless classics, here are a few looks I’m seeing everywhere — and loving:

  • Wicked – With the new film flying into theaters, I’m predicting a whole lot of Glindas and Elphabas this year. A little sparkle, a little sass — and maybe a flying monkey or two.

  • The Wizard of Oz – Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Cowardly Lion — these classics are making a big comeback, especially for family or group themes.

  • Phillies “Karen” – Pop culture moments always find their way into Halloween, and this one’s bound to make people laugh.

  • F1 Race Car Driver – With Brad Pitt’s Formula 1 movie revving up, race suits and pit crew looks are ready to speed into costume parties everywhere.

If you love staying on-trend, these are guaranteed conversation starters — and bonus points if you DIY the details.

🍂 A Look Back: The Great Pumpkin Tradition

Before Pinterest and viral costume hacks, our Halloween creativity started with Charlie Brown.

Every October, we’d pull out the same box of old sheets and craft paper, knowing it was time to bring back our favorite tradition — The Great Pumpkin. What started as a last-minute idea for a neighborhood trunk-or-treat quickly became a family staple.

There was something so simple and sweet about it — no fancy props, just a few hand-cut ghosts, a cardboard sign, and a lot of laughter as we tried to get everything to stand upright in the Arizona breeze.

👻 Tried-and-True Favorites

Trends are fun, but I’ll always have a soft spot for the classics. These are the costumes that come back year after year — easy to make, easy to wear, and always a hit:

  • Empty Nester – Playful, witty, and a conversation starter every time.

  • Price Is Right Contestant – Simple, recognizable, and budget-friendly.

  • Tippi Hedren in The Birds – A glamorous throwback that’s a little spooky and a lot of fun.

  • Everyday Inspirations – From gardener to chef to succulent plant — sometimes the best ideas are right in your backyard (or pantry).

  • Play on Names – One of my favorites: Spice Girls, but with actual kitchen spices.

These remind me why I love a good DIY — they’re clever, personal, and don’t require a trip to the costume aisle.

🧵 My Costume Process: DIY Over Store-Bought

I’ve never been one to grab a packaged costume off the shelf. Maybe it’s all those years watching my mom turn scraps into showstoppers, but there’s just something special about creating it yourself.

Here’s my usual approach:

  1. Brainstorm – If I’m stuck, I think about favorite movies, books, or a fun pun.

  2. Research – A little Pinterest scrolling usually sparks an idea or two.

  3. Gather – I raid the closet, the garage, even the junk drawer — anything’s fair game.

  4. Create – A little glue, a lot of laughter, and a costume that’s one-of-a-kind.

And speaking of one-of-a-kind…

🦸‍♂️ From the Archives: The Year of Dr. Doom

If Halloween had an award for “Most Ambitious DIY,” this would’ve been the winner. That year, our kitchen turned into a sewing studio — velvet fabric spread across the counters, gold trim tangled around chair legs, and the faint smell of hot glue in the air.

The Dr. Doom costume started as a joke and somehow became a full-blown production. I still remember the excitement when the final stitch went in — the pride of seeing all that effort come to life.

By the time Halloween night arrived, we had a superhero strutting down the driveway like he owned the block. It wasn’t store-bought or polished — but that’s what made it perfect. Every seam told a story.

🪩 Family Fun: Scooby-Doo Meets Marshmello

Group costumes are where the real memories are made — and this one still makes me laugh. It was the year we decided to mix Scooby-Doo with Marshmello, because why not?

There were LED lights, purple tights, and two dogs who happily played their part — even if one of them tried to eat the Scooby tag more than once. Watching the kids light up (literally) was pure joy.

That glowing helmet might’ve stolen the show, but it was the teamwork behind it that made the night unforgettable. A reminder that when everyone pitches in — even the pets — anything’s possible.

👑 Grown-Up Fun: A Night in Wonderland

Then came the year the adults took over — and let me tell you, Wonderland had nothing on us.

There were queens, rabbits, hatters, and a few characters that would’ve made Lewis Carroll blush. The best part? Everyone went all in. We spent weeks collecting hats, lace gloves, and sparkly red wigs — and it all came together like magic.

Standing there surrounded by friends, laughing until my cheeks hurt, I realized something: Halloween’s magic doesn’t fade as we grow up. It just changes shape — from pillowcases full of candy to glasses full of wine and memories that last far longer than the costumes.

✂️ Family & Group Costume Ideas for 2025

If you’re planning your own theme this year, here are some fun ideas to get the whole crew involved:

  • Play on Names – From the Spice Girls to Breakfast Club (yes, cereal boxes count).

  • Classic Movies – Scooby-Doo, Alice in Wonderland, or E.T. always bring smiles.

  • Everyday Heroes – Gardeners, teachers, bakers, or even “Empty Nesters” — a touch of humor goes a long way.

✨ Wrapping It All Up

Looking back through old costumes while planning this year’s reminds me what Halloween’s really about — not perfection, not trends, but the joy of creating something together.

From hot glue mishaps to family themes that didn’t quite go as planned, those moments are what make Halloween special.

So as I dig through the costume bin again this year, I’ll keep the tradition going — with a little nostalgia, a lot of imagination, and maybe one or two new glue sticks.

Here’s to another Halloween full of laughter, creativity, and the stories we’ll be telling next October.

Now tell me — what’s your favorite Halloween memory?
